Current Status and Outlook

The Tropical Disturbance (LPA) 94W over the Philippine Sea, east of Northern Luzon has rapidly organized into a weak Tropical Depression named locally as “JULIAN.” This cyclone is not expected to pose any direct effect to the country throughout its presence within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), as it is forecast to move northward towards the Southern Islands of Japan.

*TD JULIAN is expected to enhance the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) and bring cloudy skies & breezy conditions, with occasional rains and thunderstorms across the Western Sections of the Philippines. Meanwhile, its Trough will bring cloudy conditions with some isolated rain showers and thunderstorms across the Bicol Region today.

Where is JULIAN? As of 11:00 AM PhT today, August 28…0300 GMT. The poorly-defined center was located over the northern part of the Central Philippine Sea (near 16.7°N 130.4°E), about 888 km east of Casiguran, Aurora or 893 km east-southeast of Santa Ana, Cagayan.
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min avg): 45 kph near the center…Gustiness: 65 kph.
Past Movement (06 hrs) West @ 01 kph (Quasi-Stationary), towards the North Philippine Sea.
Forecast Highlights
  • TD JULIAN is expected to rapidly intensify within the next 48 hours due to conducive atmospheric environment. It will reach Tropical Storm (TS) status tonight, then as a Severe Tropical Storm (STS) by tomorrow, Saturday morning (Aug 29), and eventually will become a Category 1 Typhoon (TY) on Sunday morning (Aug 30). Kindly refer to our attached StormWatch Track for the forecast wind speeds of this cyclone.
  • TD JULIAN is forecast to rapidly accelerate northward after 48 hours towards the Ryukyu-Okinawa Area, and will move out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Monday evening (Aug 31).
  • Watch out for the next StormWatch on TD JULIAN which will be issued tomorrow afternoon, Aug 29 at 1:00 PM.
