Current Status and Outlook

FABIAN (IN-FA) has intensified into a Tropical Storm (TS) as it moves north-northwestward across the North Philippine Sea…threatens Ryukyus & Yaeyama Group of Islands.

TS FABIAN (IN-FA) is forecast to intensify further within the next 12 to 24 hours and shall turn northwestward slowly at 07 kph across the northernmost portion of the North Philippine Sea. 

Where is FABIAN (IN-FA)? As of 5:00 PM PhT today, July 18…0900 GMT:

  • Location of Center: Over the northeastern part of the North Philippine Sea (near 23.3°N 132.1°E)
  • Distance 1: 544 km southeast of Okinawa, Japan
  • Distance 2: 1,094 km east-northeast of Itbayat, Batanes
  • Distance 3: 1,086 km east of Taipei, Taiwan
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min avg): 65 kph near the center…Gustiness: 85 kph.
Past Movement (06 hrs) North-Northwest @ 12 kph, towards the Ryukyus-Yaeyama Islands.
Forecast Highlights
  • Since this TS remains far away from the Philippine Landmass, no direct effect is expected from this system. However, the Southwest Monsoon (#Habagat) will continue to be enhanced by this system, where scattered to “on-&-off” rain showers and thunderstorms will be expected across the western sections of the country through Friday, July 23.
  • TS FABIAN (IN-FA) could become a Typhoon on Tuesday afternoon, July 20 as it tracks south of Okinawa towards Yaeyama Group of Islands. The probability of this forecast remains medium to low due to high uncertainty of all of the Typhoon Global Models.
  • It may exit the northwestern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Friday noon (July 23).
