Current Status and Outlook

Typhoon (TY) CHEDENG [GUCHOL] has already reached its peak of 165 km/hr as it starts accelerating north-northeast towards the Sea south of Japan. It is expected to move out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by tomorrow evening (June 11). 

TY CHEDENG will continue to slightly enhance the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), bringing scattered to occasional rain showers with severe thunderstorms across the western sections of the country this weekend.  Please take all necessary precautions against floods and landslides.

Where is CHEDENG (GUCHOL)? As of 5:00 PM PhT today, June 10…0900 GMT:

  • Location of Eye/Center: Over the southern portion of the North Philippine Sea (near 20.4°N 130.2°E)
  • Distance 1: 855 km east of Basco, Batanes
  • Distance 2: 870 km east-northeast of Santa Ana, Cagayan
  • Distance 3: 905 km east-northeast of Palanan, Isabela
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min avg): 165 kph near the center…Gustiness: 205 kph.
Past Movement (06 hrs) North-Northeast @ 15 kph, across the North Philippine Sea.
Forecast Highlights
  • TY Chedeng (Guchol) is expected to begin its weakening phase within the next 12 to 24 hours.  This is due to increasing upper-level winds (wind shear), dry air entrainment, and cooler Oceanic Heat Content (OHC) along its path.
  • Expected to exit the Philippine Area of  Responsibility (PAR) by tomorrow, Sunday evening (June 11).
  • This typhoon will begin its transition into a Subtropical Cyclone within the next 48 to 72 hours.
