Current Status and Outlook

The broad and active Tropical Disturbance (LPA) 98W over the easternmost part of the North Philippine Sea has developed into a Tropical Depression (TD). However, this Tropical Cyclone will not directly affect any part of the country.

This TD is forecast to intensify into a Tropical Storm (TS) within the next 24 hours and shall continue moving north to north-northwest across the northeastern portion of the Philippine Sea. 

Where is FABIAN? As of 11:00 PM PhT last night, July 16…1500 GMT:

  • Location of Center: Over the southeastern most part of the North Philippine Sea (near 19.1°N 134.7°E)
  • Distance 1: 1321 km east-northeast of Palanan, Isabela
  • Distance 2: 1,322km east of Santa Ana, Cagayan
  • Distance 3: 1,536 km east-northeast of Metro Manila
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min avg): 45 kph near the center…Gustiness: 65 kph.
Past Movement (06 hrs) North @ 13 kph, towards the Ryukyus.
Forecast Highlights
  • Since this TD is too far away from the Philippine Landmass, no direct effect is expected from this system. However, the Southwest Monsoon (#Habagat) will be enhanced by TD FABIAN, where indirectly,  occasional rain showers and thunderstorms will be expected across the western sections of the country beginning this weekend through early next week. Kindly refer to our attached StormWatch Track for the forecast wind speeds of this cyclone.
  • TD FABIAN is forecast to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Monday evening, July 19, and could become a Category 2 Typhoon.
