TROPICAL STORM DANTE (CHOI-WAN) ADVISORY NO. 15

Current Status & Outlook Tropical Storm DANTE (CHOI-WAN) has temporarily moved out of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) as it approaches the drought-stricken country of Taiwan…expected to be absorbed into the Mei-yu Front within the next 24-48 hours.

Its rainbands together with its trough (extension) will still affect the western and northern coastal waters of Ilocos Provinces, where scattered rain showers with Severe thunderstorms will be expected across these areas today.

24-hr Outlook: TS DANTE is expected to complete its recurvature towards the northeast at an increased forward speed of 26 kph.  The storm is forecast to re-enter the northwestern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this afternoon, and cross Southern Taiwan tonight. TS DANTE will weaken into a Tropical Depression (TD) upon emerging over the East Taiwan Sea by early tomorrow morning (June 05).

  • Location of Center/Eye: Along western edges of the Balintang and Bashi Channels (19.9°N 118.5°E)
  • Distance 1: 284 km west-northwest of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte
  • Distance 2: 356 km south-southwest of Kaohsiung, Taiwan
  • Distance 3: 371 km west of Basco, Batanes
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min avg): 65 kph near the center…Gustiness: 85 kph.
