Current Status and Outlook

A Tropical Disturbance (LPA) over Palau known as “93W” has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR)…could become a Tropical Depression within the next 6 to 24 hours.  This system has a large circulation which could bring occasional rains, gusty winds and severe thunderstorms across the eastern sections of the country, especially Eastern Visayas & the Bicol Region this weekend.

Where is LPA 93W? As of 11:00 PM PhT last night, May 22…1500 GMT:

  • Location of Eye/Center: Near the vicinity of the Republic of Palau (near 5.6°N 134.8°E)
  • Distance 1: 195 km south of Koror, Palau
  • Distance 2: 960 km east of Mati City, Davao Oriental
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min avg): 35 kph near the center…Gustiness: 55 kph.

Forecast Highlights
  • The latest Global Typhoon Models are beginning to blend, showing this system becoming a Tropical Depression (TD) within the day, and into a Tropical Storm (TS) passing near the coastal waters of Eastern Samar and Bicol Region on Friday (May 24) and Saturday (May 25) in an almost northerly track.
  • During the passage of this potential storm, its Western Rainbands will bring occasional moderate to heavy rains with gusty winds, and Severe Thunderstorms over the Bicol Region, Eastern Visayas, and Northeastern Mindanao beginning Friday until Sunday (May 24-26). Meanwhile, early next week, as the system starts recurving away from the Philippine Sea, the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) is likely to be enhanced and bring occasional rains along the western sections of the country.
  • Once this LPA becomes a TD, Tropical Cyclone Advisories will commence and our national weather bureau PAGASA will name the system domestically as AGHON.”
