Tropical Depression EGAY (DOKSURI) StormWatch No. 03

Tropical Disturbance (LPA) 98W was upgraded to a Tropical Cyclone yesterday, under Tropical Depression (TD) classification while remaining almost stationary over the Philippine Sea.  It is now known globally as “DOKSURI” {pronounced as “tok-suree”} – a Korean name for Eagle. The local name of this system as issued by DOST-PAGASA is “EGAY”. Latest 5-day forecast now shows a path towards Taiwan, and shall pass over the island nation on Thursday early morning (July 27), with low forecast confidence.

• Location of Eye/Center: Over the eastern portion of the Central Philippine Sea (near 13.9°N 132.5°E)
• Distance 1:  1,005 km east of Naga City, Camarines Sur
• Distance 2:  1,245 km east of Quezon City, NCR
• Distance 3:  900 km east of Virac, Catanduanes

• Latest 5-day Forecast including the latest Global Typhoon Model Run (as of 12 GMT 21 July) continues to show a NNW track towards Taiwan, with Potential Landfall over the island nation on the evening of July 26 or early morning of July 27.
• Extreme Rapid Intensification (ERI) of this system cannot be ruled out due to improving sea and atmospheric conditions along the path of TD Egay (Doksuri). Forecast to become a Tropical Storm later today and into a Typhoon around tomorrow afternoon, Sunday (July 23).
• This system is likely to enhance the Southwest Monsoon (#Habagat) and bring scattered to occasional rain showers & thunderstorms across the western sections of the country beginning Sunday or Monday (July 23-24) and will persist until Friday or Saturday (July 28-29).
• Forecast to exit the northern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday, July 27.
