TROPICAL DEPRESSION GENER STORMWATCH NO. 03  (FINAL)

Current Status and Outlook

Tropical Depression GENER is rapidly approaching Central Vietnam, with its circulation becoming more disorganized and elongated. The cyclone exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) last night with little to no development. However, forecasts indicate that it may still develop into a minimal Tropical Storm before making landfall over Central Vietnam tomorrow afternoon (Sept. 19).

Since the system is now outside of the PAR, this will be the final storm watch for this tropical cyclone. 

Meanwhile, the presence of Tropical Depression GENER and Tropical Storm HENRY (PULUSAN) will continue to enhance the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), resulting in occasional rain showers and gusty winds of up to 60 kilometers per hour across the western sections of the country through Thursday, Sept. 19.

  • Location of Center: Over the South China Sea  (near 17.0°N 112.7°E)
  • Distance 1:  365 km east-southeast of Sanya City, Hainan Is. (China)
  • Distance 2:  490 km east-northeast of Da Nang City, Vietnam
  • Distance 3:  620 km south-southwest of Hong Kong
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min avg): 45 kph near the center…Gustiness: 65 kph.
Past Movement (06 hrs) West @ 20 kph, towards Central Vietnam
Forecast Highlights
  • TD GENER is still forecast to become a Tropical Storm before it makes landfall over Central Vietnam within the next 18 to 24 hours.
  • Complete dissipation of this TD is likely late Friday or early Saturday as it moves across the landmass of Vietnam and Laos.
