Current Status and Outlook

EGAY (DOKSURI) approaching Severe Tropical Storm (STS) classification while intensifying over the warm waters of the Philippine Sea in a slow, westerly track. Its westernmost rainbands are now generating severe thunderstorms across the Bicol Region and Samar Provinces.  The latest 5-day forecast continues to show a path towards Taiwan, and shall pass over the island nation on Thursday morning (July 27), with low forecast confidence.

Where is EGAY (DOKSURI)? As of 11:00 PM PhT last night, July 22…1500 GMT:

  • Location of Eye/Center: Over the middle portion of the Central Philippine Sea (near 14.6°N 129.9°E)
  • Distance 1:  730 km east of Naga City, Camarines Sur
  • Distance 2:  960 km east of Quezon City, NCR
  • Distance 3:  625 km east of Virac, Catanduanes
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min avg): 85 kph near the center…Gustiness: 100 kph.
Past Movement (06 hrs) West @ 09 kph,  across the Philippine Sea.
Forecast Highlights
  • Latest 5-day Forecast including the Global Typhoon Model Run (as of 12 GMT 22 July) continues to show a northwesterly track towards Taiwan, with Potential Landfall over the island nation on the late evening of July 26 or morning of July 27.
  • Extreme Rapid Intensification (ERI) of this system cannot be ruled out due to improving sea and atmospheric conditions along the path of TS Egay (Doksuri). Forecast to become a Severe Tropical Storm today and into a Typhoon on Monday morning (July 24).
  • This system is likely to enhance the Southwest Monsoon (#Habagat) and bring scattered to occasional rain showers & severe thunderstorms across the western sections of the country beginning today or tomorrow (July 23-24) and will persist until Thursday or Friday (July 27-28). The threat of flooding, landslides, and other related hydrometeorological hazards are likely along these areas. Please take all necessary precautions.
  • Forecast to exit the northern border of the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Thursday, July 27.
