Current Status and Outlook

Tropical Disturbance (LPA) 98W is still organizing over the Philippine Sea, with its center reforming to the east-northeast of its previous location during the past 6 hours.  Its development into a Tropical Depression (TD) is likely within the next 06 to 24 hours.  Latest 5-day forecast from the Global Typhoon Models now show a path towards the Batanes-Okinawa Area by early next week (July 24-26), but with low confidence.

Where is LPA 98W? As of 8:00 PM PhT today, July 20…1200 GMT:

  • Location of Eye/Center: Over the eastern portion of the Central Philippine Sea (near 13.0°N 133.4°E)
  • Distance 1: 880 km east of Borongan City, Eastern Samar
  • Distance 2: 1,050 km east Legazpi City, Albay
  • Distance 3: 1,000 km east of Virac, Catanduanes
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min avg): 35 kph near the center…Gustiness: 50 kph.
Past Movement (06 hrs) East-Northeast @ 37 kph, across the Philippine Sea.
Forecast Highlights
  • Latest 5-day Global Typhoon Model Run (00 GMT 21 July) now shows a turn towards the NNW, with Potential Landfall Areas somewhere along Batanes-Taiwan-Okinawa Area on July 24 to 26.
  • This LPA is likely to develop into a Tropical Depression (TD) within the next 06 to 24 hours, and will be locally named by PAGASA as “EGAY“.
  • Extreme Rapid Intensification (ERI) of this system cannot be ruled out due to improving sea and atmospheric conditions along the path of LPA 98W.
  • This system is likely to enhance the Southwest Monsoon (#Habagat) and bring scattered to occasional rain showers & thunderstorms across the western sections of the country beginning Sunday or Monday (July 23-24).
