Current Status and Outlook

The small tropical disturbance (LPA) over western Micronesia, just outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), quickly intensified into Tropical Depression 24W as it passed over or very near Yap Island this morning. It is expected to enter the PAR tomorrow morning as it continues moving toward the Philippine Sea. 

Meanwhile, the depression will enhance light to moderate northeasterly surface wind flow across the eastern sections of Luzon, including the Bicol Region and Eastern Visayas, bringing occasional rains and gusty winds today and tomorrow.

Where is  24W? As of 5:00 PM PhT today, November 03…0900 GMT:

  • Location of Center: Over Western Micronesia, outside of PAR  (near 10.2°N 137.6°E)
  • Distance 1:  285 km east of PAR
  • Distance 2:  1,260 km east of Tandag City, Surigao Del Sur
  • Distance 3: 1,860 km east-southeast of Metro Manila
How strong is it? Maximum Sustained Winds (1-min avg): 55 kph near the center…Gustiness: 75 kph.
Past Movement (06 hrs) Northwest @ 28 kph, towards the Philippine Sea.
Forecast Highlights
  • TD 24W is expected to enter PAR by tomorrow morning (Nov 04), and will be named locally as Marce.
  • This cyclone is a small-sized system, spanning around 465 km in diameter.
  • The Day 4-5 Forecasts shows TD 24W making a sharp westerly track towards Northern Cagayan on Thursday or Friday (Nov 7-8), with low Forecast Confidence (30-40%).
  • This StormWatch will be replaced by a 12-hour Tropical Cyclone Advisory once this system starts posing a threat to Extreme Northern Luzon.
